Outlook bright for AHS sailing team Posted by Jack Darnton | Apr 11, 2012 | 230 views

The Anacortes High School sailing team, part of the Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department, competed in an open regatta at Lakewood on Saturday, March 17.

There were more than 30 teams from 13 high schools from Portland, Ore., to Bellingham. Lakewood is Western Washington University’s sailing facility on Lake Whatcom. Racing started in snowy conditions around 11 a.m.

Anacortes senior Gavin Murray, skipper, and Anacortes sophomore Emily Bright, crew, got the team started on the right foot with a first and second in the team’s first two races.

Anacortes brought two teams to the race. Each team consists of a division A skipper and crew, a division B skipper and crew and one or more alternates. The division A team races two races, then all teams switch boats and the division B team races two races, completing the first rotation. All the races from division A and B are then added together to form the team’s overall score.

After more than four hours of sailing and two complete rotations, Anacortes teams finished the day in sixth and seventh place in their 11-boat fleet.
