Metal boats — both home and professionally built, power and sail — will be on display during the 25th annual Metal Boat Festival at the Cap Sante Boat Haven Friday through Sunday.
The event is hosted by the Metal Boat Society, an educational nonprofit catering to metal boat enthusiasts worldwide whether they are planning the vessel of their dreams or need help with routine maintenance.
The Metal Boat Festival, open to everyone — society members and nonmembers alike — is a series of seminars on various boat-related topics followed by question-and-answer periods, and social events.
Sessions start at the Marine Manufacturing and Technology Center just south of the marina at 8 a.m. Friday. Events move to the Anacortes Yacht Club northeast of the marina Saturday and Sunday.
Topics include rebuilding a 50-foot steel boat; selecting, specing and contracting to build a steel trawler in China; and early development of metal boat designs using steel and aluminum.
Ted Brewer, keynote speaker for Friday’s banquet, presents “Designing and Racing Boats.” Brewer has raced in waters all over the world, completed 270 designs and written three books, including “Understanding Boat Design.”
Sunday’s activities include a builders/designers forum where attendees can ask a panel any boat-related questions, and the society’s annual business meeting.
Metal boats will be on display in the water and on land and members, speakers and sponsors are encouraged to set up information booths during the festival.
A swap meet encourages participants to sell, buy or give away boat-related items they no longer want or need.
