Malcolm Donald McLendon

Malcolm Donald McLendon, 87, of Anacortes, Washington died Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Island Hospital in Anacortes.

He was born on November 8, 1924 in Los Angeles, California, the son of Jay and Mildred (Long) McLendon. Malcolm graduated from Glendale High School and served in the United States Navy as an aviator.

He graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry Management in 1949. Malcolm was a member of Theta XI fraternity at OSU. He did his graduate work at Washington State University.

Malcolm went on to work for the U.S. Forest Service in both Oregon and Washington, and while in Pendleton, Oregon he taught forestry classes at Blue Mountain Community College.

He married Barbara Guderian on February 6, 1965 in Pendleton, OR.

Malcolm retired from Publishers Forest Products Company in Anacortes, Washington in 1985.

He was active in the Episcopal Church and the Trinity Anglican Church in Mount Vernon. Malcolm was a former member of the Lions Club, Anacortes Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Friday Boys, and a 60-year member of the Society of American Foresters. He was also a driver for the Meals on Wheels program and taught First Aid classes.

Malcolm enjoyed skiing and was a member of the U.S. Forest Ski Patrol. He loved to ski, sail, fish, travel, and camp in their RV.

Malcolm was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Murray Andrew McLendon.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara McLendon; son and daughter-in-law, Curt and Lori Wyrick of Vancouver, WA; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Hal Cutting of Seattle and Tina and Martin Barron of Wenatchee; grandson, Luke Barron (Carolina); granddaughters, Sarah and Clare Barron, and Sophie (Chad) Boyer, Jenna (Kyle) Kellmer, and Katherine Wyrick; great-granddaughter, Kayden Kellmer; sister, Maureen Perry of Glendale, CA; and special friend, George Flippo.

The family thanks the staff at Fidalgo Care Center — especially appreciating the love and compassion they showed Malcolm.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church in Anacortes. Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Olney Cemetery Mausoleum in Pendleton, Oregon.
