Volunteers replacing roofs at Washington Park Posted by Jack Darnton | Apr 20, 2012 | 274 views

The old cedar shakes — and a lot of moss and debris — were removed from the roofs of the two picnic pavilions at Washington Park this afternoon. Anacortes volunteers who attend Christ the King Church will be back on the job Saturday to install new metal roofs at the popular shelters at Sunset Beach.

Just up the hill, Kiwanis volunteers and Aktion Club members were busy making major improvements at the group campground. That structure is getting a new metal roof as well. Other work includes improving the drainage and putting gravel around the fire pit.

Brush will be removed and trees limbed out to make overgrown camping sites usable again.

The project also features some “treecycling.” Kiwanis volunteer Ed Gegen said many 4-foot cedars, firs and hemlocks growing out of the roof were replanted at the park and in the Forest Lands.

See full coverage next Wednesday in the Anacortes American.
